Emma's Porch
Client: Emma - Private
Emma's Porch is a two-story front addition to an existing red-brick home in Toronto. The ground floor extends the plan forward into a wrap-around porch with full-height sliding doors behind a glass balustrade. The upper floor pushes the primary bedroom out into a new cedar-clad gable above.
The addition reads as a single timber volume set against the original brick. Vertical cedar boards clad the upper gable, horizontal boards wrap the porch and deck below. Window frames are thermally broken aluminum in black, with a large corner opening at the gable and a punched window below.
Inside, the brick carries through as a fireplace wall with a linear gas insert. Timber beams run across the ceiling, and engineered white oak floors tie the old and new rooms together. The living space opens through full-width glazing to the porch and the mature street trees beyond — it makes the room feel like it extends well past the glass line.
